October 2017 Update
In October, we participated in:
- Anabtawi 27: Activating and Protecting Human Rights in Armed Conflicts in Tunisia, with the Arab Institute for Human Rights.
- The Butterfly Effect: From Intent to Impact- The 19th Global Women in Leadership Economic Forum in Dubai.
- International Research Association of Institutes of Advanced Gender Studies (RINGS): The Geopolitics of Gender Politics and Feminist Resistances in Iceland.
- “Estimating the Cost of the Economic Impact of Violence against Women in the Arab Region” in Alexandria, for the release of the Phase 1 Workshop Findings.
- The Women Entrepreneurship Week 2017 at LAU to recognize and promote women entrepreneurs.
We launched:
- “Estimating the Cost of the Economic Impact of Violence against Women in the Arab Region” with UN Women; The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA); and the Swedish Institute in Alexandria to create an operational model to estimate the cost of violence against women as a key priority for Arab States.
- The second cycle of our GDHA program, to build the capacity of gender practitioners.
We organized:
- Food 4 Thought: Systems of Control and Spaces of Hope- A Discussion on Restorative and Transformative Justice, with Nadya Mikdashi (Skoon), Zeina Daccache (Catharsis), Naima Shalhoub, and Dr Lina Abirafeh (AiW).
- A human rights discussion focused on vulnerable groups, namely drug users, in collaboration with Skoun and as part of Baladi Cap’s Civic Engagement Initiative.
- Four workshops on capacity building for academic institutions in Lebanon on gender and GBV, with UNFPA Lebanon.
We published:
- Domestic Work in Lebanon: What are some of the main factors that contribute to the continued exploitation of women migrant domestic workers in Lebanon, Occasional Paper by Nour Kouzbari.
- A Refuge Reduced: How Changes in German Asylum Laws and Practices Impact Syrian Women Refugees, Occasional Paper by Heather Bourbeau.
We signed:
- The Civil Society Open Letter, ahead of the 2017 UN Security Council Open Debate on Women, Peace, and Security, calling for Member States to prioritize gender equality and women’s rights.
We won:
- A grant from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, in New York, for “Transnational Social Movements of Family Law Revisions Within an Islamic Framework.” This project offers to analyze research and activism of family law revision within an Islamic framework as a transnational social movement in the Arab region.
We said:
