Driving Forward Women’s Leadership in Lebanon and the Arab Region
On Tuesday, February 25th, 2020, the Arab Institute for Women, UN Women, and UN ESCWA held an event at the Lebanese American University entitled “Driving Forward Women’s Leadership in Lebanon and the Arab Region”. The event was mainly to launch the report “Pursuing Equality in Rights and Representation – Women’s experiences Running for Parliament in Lebanon’s 2018 Elections” by UN Women and the report by “Women in the Judiciary in the Arab States” by UN ESCWA.
The first session of the event entitled “Women in Politics in Lebanon: Examining Lebanon’s 2018 elections, and what it means looking forward”, was around a discussion of UN Women’s report on women’s engagement in Lebanon’s 2018 Parliamentary Elections. It included Dr. Halimeh Kaakour, UN Women Lead Consultant, H.E. Wafaa Dikah Hamzeh, Former Minister of State, as panelists and Ms. Diana Moukalled, Journalist and Co-Founder of Daraj Media as the moderator.
The panelists shared their personal experiences and discussed the findings of the report.
The second session entitled “Women in the Judiciary: A Regional Overview” was around UN ESCWA’s report on women’s leadership in the Judiciary in the Arab States. It included Nada Darwazeh, Chief, ESCWA Center for Women that presented the study and Judge Nazek El Khatib that shared her personal experience as a judge and gave an overview of the judicial situation in Lebanon.
