Awareness Session
On February 24, 2026, The AiW at LAU, in partnership with KAFA and Daraj Media, organized an awareness session titled “Unified Personal Law Advocacy Campaign and the Role of Media in Advocacy” for LAU students. The session brought together experts in media and advocacy to explore the role of journalism and awareness campaigns in addressing and countering gender-based violence (GBV).
The session opened with welcoming remarks by Ms. Myriam Sfeir, Executive Director of The AiW, who, after welcoming the students, emphasized the importance of the session in understanding the role of civil society organizations, such as Daraj Media and KAFA, in shedding light on GBV and strengthening public awareness of women’s rights issues. She also underscored the role of these institutions in ensuring that survivors’ voices are represented with dignity and accuracy.
Ms. Diana Moukalled, Founding Partner and Editor of Daraj Media, delivered a presentation on advocacy journalism, explaining its principles and its role in holding power accountable. She presented the Epstein files as a case study to demonstrate how investigative journalism relies on solid evidence, careful documentation, and systematic data collection. Her intervention highlighted the importance of verification, credibility, and ethical standards when reporting on sensitive issues, particularly those related to GBV.
Ms. Faten Abou Chacra, Advocacy Manager at KAFA, provided an overview of the organization’s work in combating GBV. She outlined KAFA’s advocacy efforts, survivor support mechanisms, and policy-level interventions aimed at strengthening legal and social protection frameworks. Ms. Abou Chacra also spoke about KAFA’s collaboration with Daraj Media, explaining how their joint efforts in advocacy journalism contributed to producing evidence-based reporting on GBV cases and bringing greater public attention to systemic gaps and accountability mechanisms.
The session concluded with an interactive discussion.
