IWSAW Contributes to Girl Rising Movement Through Film Screening

Marking International Day of the Girl, IWSAW and the Center for Lebanese Heritage hosted a screening of the groundbreaking documentary Girl Rising on LAU’s Beirut campus October 18.

The film poignantly recounts the stories of nine girls from different countries —Sierra Leone, Haiti, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Peru, Egypt, Nepal, India and Cambodia— who were victims of human rights violations such as barriers to schooling, early-aged or arranged marriages, child slavery, rape, homelessness, etc.

Through this event, IWSAW sought to shed light on the state of girls in poor societies and contributed the proceeds to the Girl Rising Fund, which works to educate girls in third-world countries.
