International women’s day: “Look Where We Are, Still”
For the second year in a row, IWSAW collaborated with the National Commission for Lebanese Women (NCLW) to celebrate International Women’s day. The event entailed the launch of the “Look Where We Are, Still” national campaign, on March 6, 2015 at the Lebanese American University. The campaign aims to shed light on the current status of the Lebanese woman in relation to her legal rights at the economic and social level.
Lawyer Fadi Karam, and secretary general of the National Commission for Lebanese Women, presented the achievements NCLW made throughout the years and that finally resulted in the amendment of laws related to women’s rights. The presentation also highlighted the laws that still need to be changed in order to achieve gender equality at all levels.
Former First lady Wafaa Sleiman, Ms. Lama Salam, as well as members of Parliament, ministers, activists, and heads of NGOs attended the event. The ceremony embraced short talks by Dr. Nashaat Mansour, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, representing President Joseph G. Jabbra, Dr. Samira Aghacy, Director of IWSAW, Ms. Jamal Hermes Gabriel, President of the Women’s Council, representing civil society, MP Gilberte Zouein, Chair of the women and children parliamentary committee, MP Robert Ghanem, Chair of the Parliament’s Administration and Justice Committee, and Ms. Randa Berri, Vice-President of the National Commission for Lebanese Women.
